Dear Incoming Fifth Graders and Parents,
Isn’t it amazing that in a few short weeks you’ll be entering your last year of elementary school! Believe us, it will be a terrific experience. You’ll be preparing yourselves academically for secondary school, and through your example you’ll be leading the entire ES, in student profile traits, attitudes, and service.
We are looking forward to knowing you and to working with you and your parents to help you to achieve excellence as a student and as a person. In preparation for the first week of school, here are a few easy things you will need to do over the break.
Reading
Read at least three books at your reading level. Do not consider books like Calvin and Hobbes, Adventures of Tintin or Animorphs… appropriate for this assignment. The novels may be in English or in another language.
From one of the books you read during the summer holiday, write a paragraph of twelve to fifteen sentences about one of the following topics. Use script (cursive) on lined paper, or write on the computer.
- Describe the main character. Write about his/her personality, what s/he believes, fears, and/or wants. Give one or two examples from the story.
- Retell a lesson the main character learns from his/her experiences. Give one or two examples from the story.
- Identify some aspects of the author’s style – what the author does to make the story so good. Give one or two examples from the story.
Writing
Find an adult in your family who remembers an historic event that happened during his/her childhood and ask to hear it. Then write a retelling of the story. (For example, Ms. Dillard could retell of one of her father’s stories of WWII. Mrs. Richards might write one of the stories her mother tells about her great-great-granddad riding with the Pony Express.)
Math
- Know your math facts: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division through 10’s. Practice them and strive to be able to do 40 in a minute.
- Practice reading and writing large numbers to 1 million. (For example, the number 7,294,530 is written in words as seven million, two hundred ninety-four thousand, five hundred thirty.)
- In addition to flash cards, there is a terrific math website you could use to polish your facts and keep other skills sharp as well. <www.internet4classrooms.com/skills_4th_original.htm>
We wish you a grand vacation!
See you in August,
Mrs. Richards and Ms Dillard

Dear Parents,
We are delighted to welcome your child to fifth grade and are eager to experience an exciting and successful school year with her or him!
Fifth grade forms the link between elementary and middle school, and as a transition year, will present a number of challenges. However, with support, encouragement and guidance, all students can be successful in meeting those challenges and will be well prepared for the next level. There are two important hurdles for students to clear. The first is to take responsibility for their own learning through persistent effort, by focusing during class time, by seeking help when they need it, and by completing all assignments. The second is to develop the organizational skills that will enable them to be successful with the first.
We are eager to work with you to help your child acquire these skills. To that end, our class blog will have:
- Useful websites for parents, connected to the units of inquiry and other information
- Home learning assignments so you will be able to see if your child is writing the assignments in the agenda correctly
- Test and quiz calendar
- Our e-mail addresses
We will let you know about Back to School night as soon as possible so that you will be able to save the date. We are looking forward to getting acquainted with you and getting started on our adventure together!
Sincerely,
Alison Richards <arichards@lincoln.edu.gh>
Felicie Dillard <fdillard@lincoln.edu.gh>
To Everyone – Have a wonderful holiday! Good-bye good friends who are off to new horizons. We will miss you – looking forward to hearing about the new places and faces in your lives! Good friends returning to Accra, see you soon! Dillrich
